Choosing the best criminal defense attorney in South Lake Tahoe.
If you are looking for a South Lake Tahoe criminal defense law firm, start with the question that matters most: who will actually be handling your case? I am Chris Parkhurst, Esq. I have defended criminal cases in El Dorado County since 1999, and my State Bar number is 203402. You work with us directly rather than with an intake team or a call center.
What that means in practice is straightforward. I read your file before I tell you what I think of it, I explain what it actually supports, and I give you the realistic range of outcomes rather than the encouraging end of it. For the detail on the charge itself, see criminal defense. To find out what happens next in your case, call.
Where a South Lake Tahoe case is heard.
South Lake Tahoe has its own police department. It does not have its own criminal court. That surprises people, and it is the single most useful thing to understand early.
Your case is filed by the El Dorado County District Attorney and heard at the El Dorado County Superior Court, in Placerville. The same court, the same prosecutor's office and the same charging practices apply as they would to a case out of Placerville. The police department changes from city to city. The court does not.
Practically, that means your court date is in Placerville, not in South Lake Tahoe, and it means El Dorado County's charging practices are the ones that matter. Those are set out on the El Dorado County page.
Who arrested you, and where it happened.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department. 1352 Johnson Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150. (530) 542-6100.
- California Highway Patrol. Highway 50 and the mountain approaches, which carry heavy weekend and seasonal traffic.
- El Dorado County Sheriff. the unincorporated lakeshore and the surrounding forest areas.
- Douglas County and Nevada agencies. immediately across the state line at Stateline, which is an entirely different legal system.
South Lake Tahoe is the most jurisdictionally complicated city I cover. The Nevada state line runs through the built-up area at Stateline, so an arrest on one side is a California case in El Dorado County and an arrest a few hundred metres away is a Nevada case in a different state's courts. The casino corridor, Highway 50 and the seasonal visitor traffic generate most of the arrests, and a great many of the people arrested here do not live anywhere nearby.

Why South Lake Tahoe clients call me.
I know El Dorado County's courts
South Lake Tahoe cases on the California side are filed by the El Dorado County District Attorney. El Dorado County handles matters at South Lake Tahoe as well as at Placerville, which is a considerable distance over the mountains. I appear in El Dorado County.
I know the agencies that make arrests here
South Lake Tahoe PD, the El Dorado County Sheriff, the CHP and Nevada agencies all operate within a few miles of each other here. Establishing which one arrested you, and in which state, is the first thing that has to happen.
Getting to me from South Lake Tahoe
My office is in Sacramento, which is a long drive from Tahoe. For most clients here the practical question is whether an attorney can appear without them making that trip, and for most misdemeanours the answer is yes.
Whether hiring an attorney is worth it depends on what you are facing. On a first misdemeanour with no record, there are people who reasonably handle it themselves. Where there is a felony, a prior, a professional licence or an immigration question, the consequences compound in ways that are difficult to undo. Call me and I will tell you honestly which situation you are in, and what representation would cost.
Areas I serve around South Lake Tahoe.
The state line runs through the built-up area, which is unusual and matters.
- Stateline and the casino corridor. where the state line runs, and where the jurisdiction question is sharpest.
- Highway 50 through town. the main route, carrying heavy seasonal traffic.
- The Y and Al Tahoe. the commercial centre on the California side.
- Unincorporated lakeshore. El Dorado County Sheriff territory rather than city police.
Nearby, I also cover Placerville, El Dorado Hills, Folsom.
What a conviction can cost.
Which of these apply depends on the charge and on your record, not on the city you were arrested in.
- Custody. County jail or state prison, depending on the offence and whether it is charged as a misdemeanour or a felony.
- Probation conditions. Programmes, testing, search terms and reporting, often for years.
- A permanent record. Public and searchable, and it appears in background checks long after the sentence ends.
- Professional licensing. Boards reach their own conclusions, on their own timelines, independently of the court.
- Firearm rights. A lifetime prohibition on a felony, and a ten-year one on several misdemeanours.
- Immigration. Some convictions carry consequences far more serious than the sentence. This needs looking at before a plea.
- Employment and housing. The consequence most people feel longest, and the one discussed least in court.
What your exposure actually is depends on the count charged. That is a conversation, not a webpage.
South Lake Tahoe questions I hear most.
I was arrested at Stateline. Is that California or Nevada?
It depends which side of the line, and the line runs through the built-up area. A California arrest is filed by the El Dorado County District Attorney. A Nevada arrest is an entirely different state's system, with different law, different courts and different consequences. Establishing which applies is the first thing to do.
I live hours away. Do I have to come back for court?
For most misdemeanours an attorney can appear on your behalf, which matters more here than anywhere else I cover, because a large share of people arrested in South Lake Tahoe live somewhere else entirely. Felonies generally require your presence.
Where in El Dorado County is my case heard?
El Dorado County handles matters both at South Lake Tahoe and at Placerville, which are separated by a mountain drive. Which applies depends on the case. See El Dorado County.
I was arrested for DUI driving up Highway 50.
On the highway it is usually the California Highway Patrol. Highway 50 carries heavy weekend traffic and enforcement reflects that. The DMV licence case starts immediately and runs on a ten-day clock regardless of where you live. See licence and DMV.
What does a criminal defence lawyer cost?
It depends on the charge, whether it is a misdemeanour or a felony, and whether the case is likely to resolve or be tried. Call and I will tell you what representation in your situation would cost before you commit to anything. For the general picture, see what a criminal defence lawyer costs in California.
